How body fat is calculated with a tape
The US Navy formula (Hodgdon & Beckett 1984) estimates body fat from circumferences: for men waist minus neck, for women waist plus hips minus neck, both related logarithmically to height. The method was developed because it is fast and needs only a tape measure.
Accuracy in research is about 3-4 percentage points against reference methods, similar to consumer bioimpedance scales. Always measure at the same time of day, the same way and relaxed; most of the error comes from measuring technique, not the formula.
What the body fat categories mean
The ACE (American Council on Exercise) classification divides body fat into five categories: essential fat, athlete, fitness, average and high. Women's thresholds are about 8 percentage points higher because the share of essential fat is larger.
For health, the fitness and average categories are both fine. The athlete category takes deliberate work, and contest condition at its lower edge is not a sustainable state. Do not go below essential fat: hormones and recovery suffer.
How to use the result
Enter your body fat into the calorie or TDEE calculator so expenditure is calculated from lean mass. It sharpens the result clearly, especially for muscular or very light people. Lean mass is also a sensible basis for a protein target.
Track the change, not a single number. Measure every 2-4 weeks the same way and watch the direction. If weight drops but the waist does not shrink, the deficit is too small or training is missing.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a body fat calculator?
The US Navy formula lands within about 3-4 percentage points of reference methods in research when measured correctly. It is accurate enough to track change, but not a precise absolute measure. The biggest source of error is measuring technique, not the formula.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
In the ACE classification, 14-24 percent for men and 21-31 percent for women covers the fitness and average categories, both healthy. Under 6 percent for men and 14 for women is at the essential fat limit and not suitable as a permanent state.
How do I measure waist and neck correctly?
Waist: men at the navel, women at the narrowest point, tape horizontal and belly relaxed. Neck: just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly downward to the front. Hips: at the widest point. Measure in the morning before eating and repeat three times.
Why are women asked for hips too?
Women store more fat around the hips and thighs, so waist alone would underestimate total fat. The Navy formula adds hip circumference for women and uses different coefficients so the result matches reference methods.
How do I lower my body fat?
A moderate calorie deficit, 2.0-2.4 g of protein per kilogram and strength training 2-4 times a week so muscle is preserved. The calorie deficit calculator gives intake and a timeline, the working weight calculator gives training loads. About 0.5 percentage points a month is a realistic rate.
