How to perform

§ 02 · Steps
  1. 01

Sit in the lever seated leg press machine and adjust the seat so your knees are at about a 90-degree angle in the starting position and your lower back stays firmly against the backrest.

  2. 02

Place both feet on the footplate about shoulder-width apart with your toes slightly turned out, and brace your core.

  3. 03

Press the footplate away in a controlled motion through your heels and midfoot until your knees are almost straight without locking them.

  4. 04

Lower the weight slowly by bending your knees and hips until you reach a controlled bottom position, without letting your lower back round or your hips lift off the seat.

  5. 05

Keep your quadriceps engaged throughout the movement and repeat for the prescribed reps at a steady tempo.

What it works

The seated leg press mainly builds your quads and leg strength. It helps with squats, stairs, and everyday lifting.

What it should feel like

You should feel it in your quads and glutes. It should not feel painful in your knees or strain your lower back.

Most common mistake

A common mistake is letting your knees cave in or your heels lift off the plate. Keep your knees tracking over your toes and drive through your whole foot, with emphasis on the heels.

Tips

§ 05 · Tips

Keep your knees aligned with your toes and do not let them cave inward. Use a controlled 2–3 second lowering phase and keep your heels firmly on the footplate to maintain the load on your quadriceps.

The two-leg seated leg press targets the quadriceps and glutes in a supported position and is well suited for developing foundational quadriceps strength and muscle mass without placing a high load on the lower back.
