How to perform

§ 02 · Steps
  1. 01

Sit in the lever horizontal leg press machine and adjust the seat so your knees are at about a 90-degree angle in the starting position and your lower back stays firmly against the backrest.

  2. 02

Place both feet on the footplate about hip-width apart with your toes slightly turned out, and brace your core.

  3. 03

Press the footplate away in a controlled motion through your heels and midfoot until your knees are almost straight without locking them out.

  4. 04

Slowly lower the weight by bending your knees and hips until you reach a controlled bottom position without letting your hips lift off the seat.

  5. 05

Keep the pause in the bottom position brief and repeat the movement at a steady tempo throughout the entire set.

What it works

Builds your quads and improves leg drive. It helps with squats, stairs, and everyday lifting.

What it should feel like

You should feel it in your quads and glutes, not your lower back or knees. Keep your heels firmly on the platform.

Most common mistake

A common mistake is letting the knees cave in or the lower back lift off the pad. Keep your knees tracking over your toes and stay controlled.

Tips

§ 05 · Tips

Keep your knees in line with your toes throughout the movement and do not let them cave inward. Use a slow 2–3 second lowering phase and keep your heels firmly on the footplate so the load stays on your quadriceps instead of shifting to your lower back.

The lever horizontal leg press targets the quadriceps and glutes in a supported seated position and is a good alternative to the 45-degree leg press when you want less load on the lower back.
